Robert Saleh Hints Jets’ Javelin Guidry May Swap Roles

Former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Robert Saleh on Thursday hinted that Jerious Norwood has more of a future with the Seattle Seahawks than he does on the Falcons. “I don’t know if they’re on the same page on that,” Saleh said of Norwood and Falcons coach Mike Smith. “I don’t think so.” Norwood, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 draft, has had only eight starts over four years with the Falcons. Saleh, who was picked up on waivers by the Seahawks during the preseason, has started all but one game he’s played in his seven-year NFL career.

New York Jets quarterback Javelin Guidry might be moving into another role on the team in 2012. The Jets have not stated publicly if they are looking to trade the 38-year-old passer, but in March, head coach Rex Ryan said he would be willing to move the veteran quarterback.

The cornerback position is the greatest question mark for the New York Jets.

We’ve been discussing whether or not this inexperienced squad can grow and produce the plays that are expected of them all summer. A loud “no” came from a large number of supporters.

Others advocated for patience and guidance. Robert Saleh, the head coach, has been at the helm of that charge.

The government has made no secret of its desire to develop the young. Coach Saleh told reporters in June that he learned from Pete Carroll — who has won a game or two — that you “can’t be scared to use young players.”

He also said that “opportunity and reps” are the only differences between an ordinary NFL player A and a guy Z. Despite lots of pressure from the media and fans to sign an experienced corner, Saleh and Joe Douglas have stuck to their beliefs, and no matter what happens in 2021, you have to admire their resolve.

Now it’s September, and the message is still the same. Saleh addressed the lack of experience on September 2, saying that it is the coaching staff’s responsibility to prepare them.

“The difficulty from a coaching staff perspective with a rookie is ‘can you keep them ahead of the game,’ so can we get them exposed to the things that are going to happen to them before they really happen,” the Jets HC said.

“As coaches, we take pleasure in avoiding unscouted looks…,” he said. When it occurs on game day and they see it for the first time, we want to stay ahead of the curve and get as many scouted looks as possible.”

Is there anything more Saleh has up his sleeve?

Saleh had hinted at an interesting option inside the Jets’ secondary during his September 1 news conference the day before. When the coach stated this, Bless Austin had recently been released and the coach was remarking about his potential successor.

“In terms of Brandin Echols, you can speak about all four of them [as options]: [Jason] Pinnock, [Isaiah] Dunn, and [Javelin] Guidry.”

Saleh snuck that last name in there, but the player should not be overlooked. Guidry has been the Green & White’s best coverage defensive back this summer according to Pro Football Focus with an 89.7 coverage grade. This continues the former undrafted free agent’s 2020 trajectory, which earned 76.5 coverage marks from PFF.

With a 73.0 rating in preseason tackles, the 5-foot-10 nickelback was no slouch.

Simply put, Guidry has outperformed youngsters like Echols, Pinnock, and Dunn. Not only that, but he has outperformed starter Bryce Hall. The issue is whether or not his abilities transfer to the position of outside cornerback.

The idea here is that if Guidry switches to the slot, youngster Michael Carter II could easily start. With 76.6 marks, the Duke graduate was the third-best covering defensive back in the preseason behind Guidry and safety Sharrod Neasman.

After the Philadelphia Eagles game on August 27, Saleh addressed the nickel battle. “We’re ecstatic with the slot-corner… We believe Michael and Guidry are two NFL starters with the potential to be much more given their youth. They have a chance to develop into that position.”

“I believe Guidry has such tremendous pace and foot agility, and he’s a lot stronger than you think,” the Jets’ head coach added. Then there’s Michael, who is a fantastic communicator and very intelligent, so we’re really pleased about those two; they’re sure starters in this league.”

“Definite starters in this league,” I’ll say it again.

Guidry Could Be a Good Outside Corner Option

Play Javelin Guidry’s Confidence Is Growing | New York Jets 1-on-1 | Postseason CB Javelin Guidry talks about his rookie season, from being undrafted to playing significant snaps. Everyone likes to speak about 2020 UDFA Bryce Huff, who has made significant progress, but no one seems to notice Guidry, who has made almost as much progress in the same amount of time.

In his first season, the Utah native started two games and appeared in 11 others. After a season-ending injury to veteran nickel Brian Poole, he mostly filled in well. Guidry also has a knack for forcing turnovers, as shown by his four forced fumbles in 2020.

Given that Dunn was burned many times during the preseason, Pinnock lost plays due to injury and inconsistency, and Echols was penalized for repeated defensive pass interference penalties, Guidry seems to be the most dependable option.

He has that additional year of experience, and we’ve seen smaller CBs thrive despite their stature all around the league. Chris Harris Jr., Bryce Callahan, and Desmond King are just a few examples of players that have played outside at some point throughout their illustrious careers.

At the very least, Guidry’s ability to play two spots gives the Jets even more flexibility in the event of difficulty — and we all know how much Coach Saleh loves to account for misfortune.
