The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is proposing changes to the ACCC Act that could see it become a regulator of online platforms, with powers to investigate complaints from consumers. Why this matters: The implications will hit tech companies around the world in Australia if they’re not careful.

The “acc 2021 registration” is a new course that will be offered by the American College of Cardiology. The course will focus on the latest developments in cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

As the countdown to the commencement of the 2021-22 college basketball season on November 9 begins, an ESPN panel of experts has made predictions for all of the country’s biggest leagues. So far, we’ve looked at Gonzaga and the best teams from the mid-major conferences (Atlantic 10, C-USA, Ivy, MAC, Missouri Valley, Mountain West, SoCon, Sun Belt, and WCC), followed by Memphis, Houston, and the AAC, the Villanova-dominated Big East, UCLA, and the resurgent Pac-12 Conference, a Big 12 looking for its second straight national title, and an SEC led by Kentucky. Our story continues with the ACC, which never ceases to fascinate.

Because of Mike Krzyzewski’s impending retirement, the Duke Blue Devils will be one of college basketball’s major storylines in 2021-22, but Coach K’s victory lap is far from the only narrative in the game — or in the ACC. After a rare NCAA tournament-less season last season, freshman prodigy Paolo Banchero headlines a star-studded class keen on delivering some trophy. A North Carolina Tar Heels team that starts the Hubert Davis era, the Florida State Seminoles, who are usually difficult under Leonard Hamilton, and a Virginia Cavaliers club that enters the season relatively unheralded but projected to be deadly are predicted to challenge Duke at the top of the league. Aside from those teams, teams like Syracuse, Georgia Tech, and Clemson, who all made the NCAA tournament last season, are unlikely to go away.

Myron Medcalf, Jeff Borzello, John Gasaway, and Joe Lunardi of ESPN’s writing staff assessed all of the league’s best teams and stories before making their predictions for the 15-team conference.

Writers’ roundtable for ACC 2021-22

What about the 2021-22 Duke Blue Devils intrigues you the most that has nothing to do with Mike Krzyzewski’s upcoming retirement?

Paolo Banchero (5) and Trevor Keels (1) are two of the Blue Devils’ most promising newcomers in 2021-22. Rob Kinnan is a sports reporter for USA TODAY.

Medcalf: College basketball has had a few of players over the last 20 years who could accomplish things that no other player in the nation could. Maybe I’m forgetting Emeka Okafor, Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Trae Young, and Zion Williamson. But the point is that, right now, the buzz around Paolo Banchero says he may be one of those individuals as well. And maybe that is the difference this season: despite the skill pools at Kansas and Gonzaga, or the depth at Texas, none of it will matter because Duke has Paolo and you don’t.

Banchero is after the unique just-add-water immediate excellence that Duke has experienced with a slew of young players who have put together good debuts. It seems like a season when you need to get your popcorn ready and watch every game, every possession Banchero has before the NBA draft in 2022, when he may be the first choice. That hasn’t happened since Zion.

Borzello: Banchero, of course. Banchero is widely regarded as the most college-ready recruit in the 2021 class, and he’ll be in a position to deliver and be the Blue Devils’ go-to player right away. Banchero may not be as distinctive as Chet Holmgren or as dynamic a scorer as Jaden Hardy, but he’s a strong contender for the No. 1 selection in the NBA draft in 2022.

On the offensive end, he’s an inside-outside danger who can score in the post and step out and hit shots, but he’s also a solid rebounder on both sides of the floor. Defenses will have a hard time matching up with him, and I believe Coach K will find ways to use him at the 5 while Mark Williams is on the bench. If Duke stays around the top of the rankings for the majority of the season, Banchero should be very effective right away, putting himself in contention for ACC Player of the Year and maybe the Wooden Award.

Gasaway: I’m curious to see whether the newest addition to the Sensational Duke Freshman This Time category is indeed the phenomenon we expect him to be. We’ve seen Kyrie Irving, Austin Rivers, Jabari Parker, Jahlil Okafor, Brandon Ingram, Jayson Tatum, Marvin Bagley, Zion Williamson, Vernon Carey, and Jalen Johnson, among others, take up this mantle during the last decade or so. Others were superstars, while others were not, some were wounded, and one, Okafor, was a member of a national championship team.

Now I’m going to take a seat and see what Banchero can accomplish. On paper, this is a talented but not necessarily dominating Duke squad, with the Associated Press ranking them No. 9 in the preseason poll. This is the lowest rating for a program that has been voted into the Associated Press’ preseason top 10 in each of the last 14 years. Banchero is described as a talented scorer and strong worker with a 6-foot-10-inch, 250-pound frame. Will he be able to live up to Zion’s hype and lead Duke to its first ACC championship in 12 years? That’s why I’ve come to visit you. What was the coach’s name again?

Lunardi: I’m not trying to be nasty, but can Duke win anything this season? The Blue Devils have gone 73-37 (.664) in ACC play since winning the national championship in 2015, one of the longest Final Four droughts in Coach K’s tenure. Since 2010, Duke hasn’t shared or won the ACC regular-season title, and it hasn’t won the conference outright since 2006.

It isn’t about the present coach, the future coach, or the current star. Is it possible for Duke to reclaim his title as Duke? In 35 years, the Blue Devils have won five national titles, 12 Final Fours, and 13 No. 1 seeds, so we shouldn’t be concerned. But this is the right moment.

What is Hubert Davis’ toughest challenge in his first year as UNC’s head coach, and what is the Tar Heels’ ceiling?

Hubert Davis intends to play in a somewhat different manner than the North Carolina Tar Heels did under Roy Williams. Gerry Broome/Associated Press

Gasaway: The good news for Davis is that Roy Williams left a very full cabinet. Armando Bacot, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, and R.J. Davis are all returning from a squad that was seeded eighth in the NCAA tournament. Transfer to Marquette Dawson Garcia is a 6-foot-11 three-point shooter. Oklahoma is transferring. Brady Manek also has a pair of three-pointers.

The bad news is that the Tar Heels were abysmal on offense last season due to an alarmingly high number of turnovers. During ACC play, UNC was dead last in the conference in turnover %. Let’s assume something has changed: North Carolina has an average turnover rate, Bacot continues to dominate the offensive boards, and Love continues to find the range from the outside. You’re looking at an Elite Eight ceiling in that situation.

Lunardi: I’ll go one step farther than John and say North Carolina’s Final Four ceiling is higher than normal. I’m not suggesting the Tar Heels are one of America’s top four teams or a potential No. 1 seed. However, the team has enough skill to win four NCAA tournament games.

Carolina rebounded well following Dean Smith’s retirement, making two Final Fours in three seasons under Bill Guthridge. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hubert Davis achieves the same or greater results in his first three years.

Borzello: Davis wants to tweak the offensive scheme that Williams used at Chapel Hill during his time there. Williams was notorious for using two conventional big men in his lineups and overpowering opponents in the paint and on the glass. Davis wants to make the offense more contemporary. He made it clear when he acquired two more talented forwards, Manek and Garcia, and then reaffirmed it last month when he told me, “I’m not looking for typical bigs. I just don’t believe it. Bigs that are flexible and can play on the perimeter appeal to me.” It’s a significant shift from what the Tar Heels have done for the last two decades, and it will undoubtedly be difficult.

Carolina’s ceiling will be whatever Caleb Love’s ceiling happens to be. Love was one of my favorite players coming out of high school, but he struggled as a freshman with turnovers and perimeter shooting. During ACC play, he did show glimpses of his talent, with 25 points and seven assists against Duke in February and 18 points and seven assists against Duke in March. His drive-and-kick game could benefit from a more spread-out offensive approach.

Davis’ greatest difficulty, in my opinion, is that he will not be given a grace period at UNC. That isn’t always fair, but when you receive one of the top three jobs in college basketball after nine years of sitting next to a legend, people want results. He was not employed as a basketball coach. In the era of transfer portals and competition for recruits who may pick between a new school, the G League, or the Overtime Elite, he was hired to expand The Carolina Way.

Davis can win early with Garcia, Bacot, Manek, and Love. More than that, he’ll be expected to win early and challenge for an ACC championship while serving as Roy Williams’ successor. This isn’t a Matt Doherty issue, but when he departed after three seasons, he mentioned the “immensity” of the mission at UNC. Davis is unable to seek guidance from Mike Hopkins or another former assistant who has been promoted in previous seasons. This is a huge position at a prestigious institution, and it’s one-of-a-kind. How will Davis deal with it all? That will have an influence on his team’s ability to realize its potential, which I believe is an ACC championship and a run to the Elite Eight if everything falls into place.

What’s your favorite ACC tale that doesn’t include Duke or North Carolina?

Kihei Clark (0) is one of the top returnees for a Virginia squad that has a lot of unknowns. Gerry Broome/Associated Press

Borzello: Despite the fact that Virginia returns just a few key players from last season and isn’t bringing in a large recruiting class, I can’t bring myself to pull the Cavaliers off of my preseason top 25. It’s a tribute to Tony Bennett’s talent. Since the 2013-14 season, Virginia has finished first, second, fifth, first, first, second (tied), first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first All eight clubs were ranked in the top 25. I simply have faith in Bennett to figure things out.

However, there are a lot of unanswered questions. Kihei Clark and Reece Beekman are back on the perimeter, while transfers Jayden Gardner (East Carolina) and Armaan Franklin (Indiana) will contribute… and that’s about all we know for now. For the Cavaliers, who will step up?

Medcalf: For $1,000, I’ll take Louisville. The NCAA was so outraged by Chris Mack’s handling of the Dino Gaudio extortion case that it revised its initial notice of complaints emanating from the FBI investigation and added further charges. Louisville’s penalty for the NOA might be announced this season by the independent panel that will determine the judgment. All of this is happening as Mack tries to win his first NCAA tournament game since being hired in 2018. He lost both David Johnson and Carlik Jones, so he’ll need some fresh faces to step up in what may be another exciting season for the team (see Marshall standout Jarrod West).

Gasaway: Will Virginia be able to keep up its fantastic run? The Cavaliers have won nine more conference games than Duke and 16 more than North Carolina in the last decade. Because of this, the ACC media chose the Hoos to finish fourth in the conference, while the Associated Press ranked Tony Bennett’s team at No. 25. Laptops, on the other hand, are pessimistic about a rotation that includes Clark, Beekman, Gardner, Franklin, and talented freshman like Taine Murray. Is UVa poised for a bad year, or will Bennett be able to work his magic once more?

Lunardi: The ACC’s highest finish last season was a pair of No. 4 seeds (Virginia and Florida State). Florida State would have been the league’s top entry as a No. 2 seed the year before, but COVID canceled the NCAA tournament.

When was the last time the ACC didn’t have a top seed? You’ll have to go back to the 2012-13 season to see what I’m talking about. When was the last time the conference went two years without one? We’re talking about the campaigns of 1988-89 and 1989-90.

Nobody mentions it, but the ACC has dropped just a smidgeon. Recently, the top of the Big 12 and the top of the Big Ten have performed better (and figure to be again). In a league where the bottom is just too deep, my favorite narrative is what can history’s finest basketball conference do to change that trend.

Who is the ACC club that isn’t getting nearly enough attention coming into 2021-22?

Can Mike Young and the Keve Aluma-led Hokies go all the way in the NCAA tournament? USA TODAY Sports/Jenna Watson/IndyStar

Borzello: Virginia Tech, I believe, is being utterly overlooked in the preseason. I had the Hokies in my original top 25 back in early April, and although that was probably overly bold, I still believe they were underappreciated last season. Tech was 14-4 overall, 8-3 in the ACC, and in contention for the league championship on Feb. 6. Due to COVID difficulties, the Hokies only played four games the remainder of the season. However, when fully healthy, this is a club that has defeated Villanova, Virginia, and Clemson. In ACC play, Virginia Tech had the best defense. Mike Young returns three starters and the team’s sixth man, as well as bringing in Wofford transfer Storm Murphy, who played for the Terriers under Young. I have the Hokies just outside the top 25 in the US, and I believe they are a definite top-five ACC club.

Notre Dame returns with more experience than any other team in the conference, according to Gasaway. Last season, Prentiss Hubb, Dane Goodwin, Nate Laszewski, Cormac Ryan, Trey Wertz, and Yale transfer Paul Atkinson hit 55 percent of their 2s in ACC play, and the rotation will be top-heavy this season with seniors like Prentiss Hubb, Dane Goodwin, Nate Laszewski, Cormac Ryan, Trey Wertz, and Yale transfer Paul Atkinson. Last season, the Irish outscored ACC opponents by a single point in 18 games, but only managed a 7-11 record as a result. Notre Dame is owed a nice bounce or two by the basketball gods, and you’re looking at a seasoned squad that’s well-positioned to pay that check. This won’t be the ACC’s best defense, and it’s unlikely that ND opponents will ever commit a turnover. Mike Brey’s team, on the other hand, will score some points.

Lunardi: To me, Virginia Tech seems to be a Sweet 16 team. The Hokies have the defense, experience, and coaching in place to recreate what Buzz Williams accomplished three years ago before leaving for Texas A&M. Mike Young will have to work very hard to get back to that level, since they were Tech’s only NCAA tournament victories since 2007.

He will, I believe. This is the season.

Medcalf: I believe that is Virginia Tech. Mike Young, on the other hand, is accustomed to it. The young, rising-star assistant or head coach who lands a huge Division I position is adored in college basketball. Is it true that the head coach, who is in his late 50s, is now getting his chance? It doesn’t truly impress us. Young has only finished outside the top four in his league’s conference standings once since 2009-10, and it was during his first season at Virginia Tech in 2019-20. The Hokies were 14-5 until a late-season collapse.

All of this is to demonstrate why a Virginia Tech team led by Nahiem Alleyne and Keve Aluma will be able to overcome the loss of Tyrece Radford. Young has triumphed in the face of adversity at many levels of collegiate basketball. This Virginia Tech team has a lot of skill and a coach who deserves greater national attention after taking the team to the NCAA tournament last season.
